What is a CNAME record?

A CNAME record is a type of DNS record used to map a hostname to an A record of another hostname.  Generally speaking, you would use a CNAME record to have multiple hostnames responding to the same A record without needing to set up each A record individually..

For example, if you needed www.example.com to resolve to the same A record as example.com , you would create a CNAME record for www.example.com that points to example.com .
