What is a TXT record?
A TXT record is a type of DNS record that is relatively unique in that it is not used to map a hostname to a server. A TXT record, instead, is read by outside sources for a variety of purposes. The most common uses for a TXT record include:
SPF Records:
SPF records are used to restrict which servers are allowed to send mail from the domain name. SPF records are used to reduce the amount of spam coming from a given domain name. For more information on SPF records, follow this link.
Authentication:
There are a number of different web services that require a domain owner to enter a TXT record in order to verify ownership of the domain name. The most common example we see is Google Apps. To view Google Apps' TXT record values, follow this link.
